The PowerBook G4 machines are quite nice, and will run Leopard just fine. My fav is the 15" 1.5-GHz. Always felt the 17" was too big'n'bulky. Might want to consider an iBook G4. They're perhaps more suitable for a child; less fragile. How computer saavy is your niece? Another possibility might be a hacintosh - an Atom based Netbook running OS X.
