That's arrogant. The answer depends on one's values, priorities, and
perspectives.
For me myself speaking for myself and not demanding others see things
my way (hint):
$200 is about the value of an older g4 book less than 1ghz. Actually
this is a real factual estimate based on recent market observations.
Personally as a person of limited means, more than $400 is limit to
spend on any computer for my personal use. My current debate for
myself for a while is whether to buy a 1.5 ghz g4 powerbook or a
recent model dual core pc linux book both of which are selling in
around the $350 range. Part of the issue is I am not sure I need
either just yet, what are my needs, my 550 g4 meets my needs most of
the time and I have a better desktop g4.
The OP I believe was buying a machine for a kid, for whom a late g4
would almost certainly be adequate for a number of years, if it came
from a responsible owner who had taken good care of it, and would cost
a great deal less, especially if their ability to care for it was in
question. But some people want to spend a lot and some don't and its a
matter of personal preference mostly.
I'm real conservative... and most people find it unbelievable these
days that I can be very productive on a 10 or 15 year old 'book, but I
can and do. It really depends on values more than anything else, and
values can't argued with unless conflict is your aim (I have a hard
time remembering this so I'm reminding myself).
Its the attitudes associated with new macs that mostly motivates me to
keep using my old ones, as much as possible. Conveniently my budget
helps remind me.
