You will find that this depends on more than just a capable card. It
depends on:
a) Capable card (card has a WPA capable chipset)
b) Adequate driver support (driver supports WPA TKIP or WPA2 AES or
mixed mode)
c) Operating system support. (OS knows how to handle WPA)
d) Correct firmware for the card.(as this dictates what features will work.)
With all the will in the world, if a single one of those is not in
place, the card will work only within the parameters of the available
software. A lot of Atheros cards do not have the firmware on board, and
have it uploaded on initialization (which is kind of both a blessing and
a nightmare.) It is also worth noting that two identical cards *might*
perform exactly the same way with the same firmware, but completely
differently with differing versions. OEM products often use custom
firmwares and the hardware ID's of OEM cards often differ. Generally the
manufacturer ID and Device ID need to match a known card for the OS to
initialise and use the card correctly - this will be why some cards will
work and other that are the same chipset do not. It is also worth noting
that the aerial (antenna for US readers) on the card needs to be in good
working order. If there is any damage (and PC cards have a habit of
sticking out and getting pulled about) it will initialise, look like it
is working and go nowhere.
Best advice, sit directly by the router (if you can, so close the
aerials are almost touching) and try again. This often helps. Make sure
you realise that the HEX and plain ASCII keys for WEP are not
interchangable - the ASCII is a 7bit representation of the HEX, so if
the card wants HEX and the router wanst ASCII, make sure you do the
correct conversion. There should be 4 ASCII characters for every 8 HEX
digits.
