You're giving good advice...for Windows users...

A lot Intel based chipsets and other manufacturers, such as Broadcom, use this method too, as it meant they didn't need to keep flashing the firmware every time the standards are tweaked and lowers overall costs. What I should have said was "a lot of G cards did not wave onboard firmware, for example the Atheros chipset cards commonly do this.) But then again, I was under the impression that Apple used Atheros for some of the Airport Extreme cards - which Wikipedia at least backs up, though they seem to be the "integrated" ones used in some Intel models. Hazy memory.
