c) Operating system support. (OS knows how to handle WPA)
Which it does, per the OSX version (>= 10.3) noted on the Apple KB note.
Is that a blanket 10.3, or only for "Airport ready" models? Was the
Pismo ever sold as Airport ready? Using a PCMCIA or Airport to PCMCIA
card adapter would say "no" to me. This might be an arbitrary
restriction that Apple imposed for no real reason or a technical one due
to reliability of the Cardbus interface.
The Pismo was the first Airport ready laptop. Mine has an Original
Airport card in it (although Fedora isn't convinced).
You can use PC Cards with the Lucent / Orinoco chipset with OS 9 and
they would be recognized as an Airport card. They do not work with OS X
using the Airport software. 802.11g cards using the Broadcom chip set
can be used with Airport software under OS X (they are seen as Airport
Extreme cards) but not under OS 9. Simple huh?
Oh, and just for grins if the Broadcom chip set card is inserted when
the computer boots it kernel panics. You get tired of smacking yourself
on the head on the rare occasions you need to boot the computer and then
forget to eject the card (until it reminds you)
