Hi Alan,
THANK you for the suggestion...um...er--it did/didn't work.  Here is what
happened and maybe you can suggest how to try again....  I pressed the three
keys and the power button (your directions did not say when to release the
power button, so I continued to hold it down- then slipped a saw green (even
the light on the zip module glowed green so I thought I was in business!).  I
repeated the procedure letting the power button go.  This time I got the chime
and the OS version screen and I thought I was safe and THEN---the (new) power
adapter connector slipped out of the back and the screen went black again. I
(as fast s I could) plugged it back in and  tried repeating the steps-
immediately- but no luck-- Any suggestions?
     There for one brief moment....Sigh.

Did you try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit)?
Hold down the three keys at lower left [Fn-Shift-Ctrl] and press the power key.
The indicator light at the base of the screen should come on.
Release all the keys and wait 10 seconds before pressing the power key to
restart.

If this doesn't work, the prime suspects are faulty power adaptor, and faulty
power board (the small circuit board where the adaptor plugs into the computer).

If the computer does start, you would be well-advised to reset the PRAM
(Parameter Random Access Memory). Switch off, or restart the computer. Have the
cmd-opt-P-R keys pressed before the startup chime, keep pressing them until you
hear the startup chime a second time, and then a third time.

hth.. Alan Dow
