linux is a good idea for security and also to rehabilitate old computers

try google, it's always a good start ...linux has a large community, you can learn from wikis
BTW linux is harder for macs, because of hardware specificity of apple products, and smaller community.
In my opinion, better distro I test was Yellow Dog, but I think is no more updated
