I suspect the 700MHz G3 is just too slow for smooth > playback in almost any OS? Problem solved! I found VLC version 0.8.5 from mac.oldapps.com, and it installed and runs nicely. I can play back videos from a USB flash drive with no trace of jerkiness, even though the USB port has to be only version 1.1. Since my iBook has only a CD drive, I can rip my DVDs to Xvid files and save them on thumb drives for playback. The whole idea was using the iBook to play videos on long trips, and using a flash drive is the most energy efficient way.
