As already described, you have to install Perian to even approach .avi's. I don't even bother trying them on my Pismo. They are problematic on my Power PC G4-400. They play ok on my dual 1ghz MDD powerpc runing 10.5.8 but then my video card is only a ATI 128 rage 16mb and I get some frame stuttering or pauses slight glitches.
.avi's in general, are best to be avoided for those under 1ghz processor. Dual better! And don't forget a video card that's fast. That's the biggest downfall of those laptops, the video card. So, either re-encode those files to something your machine can handle or don't bother with AVI's. There is no way around it, that encoding method hogs cpu power and more. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Books, a group for those using G3 iBooks and PowerBooks (we run a separate list for G4 'Books).
