As already described, you have to install Perian to even
approach .avi's.

I don't even bother trying them on my Pismo.
They are problematic on my Power PC G4-400.
They play ok on my dual 1ghz MDD powerpc runing 10.5.8
but then my video card is only a ATI 128 rage 16mb and I get
some frame stuttering or pauses slight glitches.

.avi's in general, are best to be avoided for those under 1ghz
processor.
Dual better! And don't forget a video card that's fast.
That's the biggest downfall of those laptops, the video card.

So, either re-encode those files to something your machine can handle
or don't bother with AVI's. There is no way around it, that encoding
method hogs cpu power and more.
