Not that anybody but me cares, but I took the faulty Zip 100 drive
apart to see if I could fix it.

It was held together by some hidden (under plastic stickers) wood type
screws which I managed to find and so I could take the thing apart.
When I did, the motor unit with the bearing fell off the plastic
mount. In fact I think it had already come loose inside and that's
what was making the horrendous noise. After all it was only attached
with a very light friction fit on some tiny plastic pins. I fixed that
by gluing the pieces back together. Tomorrow I'll reassemble it and
see it it works.

I was surprised at how cheaply made this unit looks. It cost some $200
new as I recall but the insides look cheap and shoddily built and are
stamped "Made in China."
