FWIW, my expansion bay ZIP module for my Pismo works excellently, it is MUCH better than an external.
If you could get yours working you would be happy I think. If you are like me, fixing things makes me happy especially when they work well. At least, hold on to the carrier. Maybe you can replace the actual drive with one for a different powerbook, or even a pc notebook.
