Hi wren,
The solder discussion was very interesting.
<https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2097682?start=0&tstart=0>
Our first family mac was a secondhand 128k and it was a lemon. Never
worked properly. Eventually a friend got frustrated and opened it up and
just soldered all the bits he could and after that it worked perfectly.
(Until it eventually blew up, my dad reminded me recently.)
The Lombard's L2 cache problem was well known and, as far as I know,
it's not fixed by soldering.
I don't think it is a matter of just replacing the L2 cache but I don't
know that. The friend who gave the Lombard to me suggested I replaced
the motherboard and that that should be easy. But it was easier (and
cheaper) to just buy an old Pismo. But I hate to see anything go to
waste when it could be working.
So still waiting for answers... and really sorry to hear about your Pismo.

Di,
Ever since you posted, I had hoped someone would have some wisdom to
share for your situation. I'm not knowledgeable enough myself to be of
much use. However, I ran across something tonight that possibly would
be useful. There is an old discussion on the apple forums that talks
about the failure of solder joints on various motherboards being the
reason for many failures. Are Level 2 Cache chips soldered to the
board? Would that be a reason for your Lombard behaving badly? (I have
no soldering skills, but I find this fascinating.)
If anyone wants to see the info that I read, it is post number 9 on
this discussion thread:
Logic Board Repair?

There is an other discussion here about permanently disconnecting the
PRAM battery. Since I'm unable to explain myself in technical terms
very well, I hope this might help explain better.
Can I disconect PRAM battery permanently ?
