What are the real advantages of OS 10 over Windows? If you're happy with OS 9, then there is no need to go up to X. X offers what a real operating system should offer: protected memory, so that when an application crashes, it doesn't take down other applications or, ever worst, the whole OS; pre-emptive multitasking: so that no application can grab the whole CPU for itself leaving you, the user, staring at the screen without being able to do anything. In OS X, I can launch 2-3 applications almost at the same time, switch back to my email client to read a few emails while the applications load in the background. I can have all kind of processes going on, I can always click on the desktop to get back to the Finder, or use ASM (or Apple System(?) Menu), which brings back the application menu from OS 9 and before in OS X and I can switch to *any* running application. Plus, I can mount Windows shares right on my desktop, from the Finder, have a real Java implementation, etc. Don't be fool by the appearances: Windows XP did "borrow" from the Aqua look but it's far from having the feel. I know it because I have to help my wife with her Dell running XP. The interface is still clumsy in its usage and it shows its root being DOS/Windows3.1/Windows95/etc. Just my $0.02... -Laurent. -- =========================================================================== Laurent Daudelin Developer, Multifamily, ESO, Fannie Mae mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Washington, DC, USA ************************* Usual disclaimers apply ************************* COBOL /koh'bol/ n.: [COmmon Business-Oriented Language] (Synonymous with evil.)
