That's very strange. The file is maybe corrupted somehow? You could maybe try to force open it in a text editor to see if you can recover some data. There might be a lot of control characters but you might be able to see your data. If you have BBEdit, I would try this one first. If not, you could always try TextEdit that comes with OS X. Change or add a file extension on your file to 'txt'. But make sure you're working on a copy of the file.
