Another possible solution is to use MacLink Plus Deluxe to access the file. You can set the software up to translate the file from one version to another. It can also be used to identify the existing file's author and version. Finally, it can be used to open the file in a fashion similar to that suggested by someone earlier in the thread (Textedit).
