I mix and match freely as well without a problem. I have an old Lucent 802.11b (Airport) card in my Lombard, a 3Com 802.11b card in my old Toshiba laptop, an original Airport card in my G4 desktop (Sawtooth) and an Airport Extreme card in my 12" G4, all connected to an Airport Extreme base station at home. My 12" G4 with AE also works perfectly on my friend's original graphite Airport network.
