Hi Peter,

Unfortunately, I can't do this exactly in the room the computer is in; the
switch is (sort of) broken. It will go on and off by pushing it in, but you
can't tell it's on until you move it just so much, and then the light turns
on totally (I think all the way). I can tell a small difference, I believe,
when the dimmer is totally turned off in this room, though.

I had already done this experiment in the adjacent room, and wasn't certain
that I could see a difference except when it was turned on or off--I am
almost sure about that, though, but the effect wasn't so strong as to be
unmistakeable. I do know that during the day when both are off, things are
better, but there's shimmering still.

Since I originally mentioned the monitor shimmering, I've remembered that
there's another dimmer in the house too--downstairs. I'm also guessing that
the downstairs wiring is the wiring the flourescents are wired into too.
(Sometime I'll check, just to see, but it's extremely likely to be wired
that way because of the much easier fish. There are fairly unorthodox
wiring schematics here, I'd guess, since these things were added after the
house was originally built.)

Anyway, the really unmistakeable effect on the monitor comes when the
vacuum cleaner downstairs is turned on. The downstairs dimmer switch would
probably be in the same circuit too but it's not always on.

I don't know whether this might be at all related--I assume not--but I've
never been able to listen to a.m. radio at all, not since the first day in
this house (in the dark ages). Radio Shack sells a gizmo that sometimes
works for radio interference, but it had no effect here. (When I took it
back the salesman said, "See, I told you not to get your hopes up!" Of
course my hopes were up, just the same...)

I've had the dimmer replacements on the "to do" list since last fall.
Thanks for your help and the nudge, Peter; I'll plan to get all three of
them replaced soon.
