Hi all. I just joined the list and this is my first post. I do recognise
some of y'all from my Quadlist / PCI List days, however. I just got a
new-to-me blue & white G3 (350 MHz, 256 RAM, 6-gig, 4-gig, Sys 9.11) and, of
course, I've got some questions about it. I do apologise if any of these
have been asked and answered before my arrival:

1. I've got an external CD burner (Mitsumi CR-4802TE in a LaCie USB
enclosure) that the Finder will not recognise. Actually, there's more to it
than that - the Finder will recognise it if I enable the new Apple (OS 9.1)
authoring extensions, but then I lose Toast support. In order to use it in
Toast, I've got to disable the extensions. I'm pretty sure there's a fix for
this out there somewhere, as I seem to recall reading something about it a
few months ago in one of the magazines, but I dismissed it because it didn't
apply to me at the time, and now I can't find the article. Any leads?
Also, I was able to use Toast 5 with my old (SCSI) setup, but it doesn't
seem to like the USB burner, despite the claims made on Roxio's website, so
I'm stuck with 3.8.2. If anyone knows a fix for this, I'd love to hear about
it.

2. Now that I've got a G3, I'd like to try running OS X, just because I can.
However, the computer's previous owner (a friend and a guy I trust
implicitly in all matters Macintosh) said that he had to abandon his install
of X because the new OS did not play nicely with a: some (apparently too
slow) RAM he had installed and b: the second hard drive, a 4-gig
Apple-branded Quantum. I've been searching around MacFixit and the usual
sources for info about this, but have had no luck. Has anyone heard about or
experienced this phenomenon? Any and all leads would be greatly appreciated.

3. How long is it going to take me to get used to this $#&$*!@ tiny
keyboard?

Thanks for your time and help,

Mitch.
