168-pin FPM 5-volt DIMMs (for an 8500, etc) have also come way down in price,
though not as far as PC-100 or PC-133. I think it might be around $50 USD for
128 MB. velocityupgrades.com probably has the best price on the 5-volt; OWC
probably has the best deals on the PC-1xx.
It could be memory causing the OS X problems or it could be a marginal drive
or improper jumber settings on one or both of the drives. Again, IDE drives
are so cheap, now, that you should get a new one to replace it. 20 GB HDs are
probably between $75 to $100.
Sometimes it's necessary to adjust the order conflicting extensions in order
to get them to play well together. I used to use a generic CD-ROM driver on my
IIci. If I let it load before the IOmega extension, it would mount my Zip
drive and the IOmega ext would fail to load and the Zip wouldn't work
properly. As a rule, extensions load alphabetically. By changing the name of
the IOmega ext, I got it to load first and then all was well. As for using the
CD burner as a second CD-ROM drive, I'd suggest creating 2 Extension Manager
sets and reboot with the Toast CD ext disabled before burning CDs.
