when you have a long warranty on products the best mechanism is usually
the cheapest, it saves repairs. they will likely use the best to
protect thier image and market share as well. is seems that quantum
made great scsi but poor ide drives, and maxtor just the opposite.
hopefully they will keep the best technologies. in that light the
merger makes more sense. it's still troubling that hyundai owns most of
maxtor, since they're know for economy rather than quality. generally
the actual manufacturing cost is a small part of the total cost to the
seller, and very low compared to the sale price so there isn't too much
incentive to save a little and ruin your reputation. advertising and
extra layers of useless managment usually account for alot more of most
companies expenses than manufacturing. then there's the cost of
shipping and customer support, both of which become expensive quickly if
you sell trash but give it a good warranty. i hope they'll be smart
about it, but big companies often do foolish things.
