At one point, IBM 1/3 height drives were made by WD but were branded IBM.
Later WD 1/3 height drives were made in a WD factory, but used IBM tooling.
These were branded WD, but all marks on the ICs, castings and other
components were IBM.
Now, the drives are totally IBM or are totally WD.
This from two companies which have *not* merged, unlike the present case of
Quantum into Maxtor.
In order to sort this out, you're going to have to apply the "Chevymobile"
theory, and ask for a refund based upon the "branded' product (Maxtor)
actually being composed of components/assemblies from another company
(Quantum), which was not disclosed.
Personally, I've had good results with Quantums, as OEM drives.
But the value and performance leaders (respectively) right now are Maxtor and
IBM, and Quantum just doesn't make the grade as an aftermarket drive.
