I added a Rev B Rom Dimm to my Beige G3 233 and have not experienced
any problems. I was just merely saying that it was an Apple part
which doesn't necessarily guarantee that there won't be problems. I
also added a 466 Apple motorola zif processor which is along the same
line of not needing a driver, as well as you can install any Apple
update. It works great. Now I did hear if you installed an IBM zif,
made for Apple, people were experiencing problems with it on Rev A
Rom Dimms. I actually bought a Rev B Rom Dimm with in mind to buying
the IBM 500mhz zif but I got a good deal on a 466mhz apple motorola ,
so I never found out if that was true for my Beige G3 but obviously
others had problems.

It does seem that that you have less headaches when you buy an Apple
part. I recall that Apple was accused of deliberately making G3
upgrades not work but never sure if that story was true. I wouldn't
put it past them. It does seem suspicious that all of a sudden Toast
doesn't work that well anymore since they started selling CDRW with
their computers. On another list someone made the statement that
Apple was a Monopoly which caused a big uproar. They are perhaps more
of a dictatorship than a Monopoly. But we should be happy that Apple,
at least, has gotten away from many proprietary items and has adapted
many PC standards to make it cheaper for us. I always harp on cloning
but I had the thought that maybe Apple could loosen up a bit and
maybe sell motherboards cheaply with an atx standard and you could
make your own computer like PC people have the fun in doing. This way
Apple still have control over the most important part of the computer
and continue to guarantee compatibility. It could be a start perhaps.
But Apple seems bent on controlling your taste and thinks everyone
should like an iMac. Here I go dreaming again!
