Once had a similar problem on a G3.  Removed the drive, was successful in
performing a low-level format on a PC (remember to use FDISK first), then
replaced in Mac and used Drive Setup.

Messy, but it worked.

Although ATA drives are so cheap now it may be wiser to replace it.  It
could be a fault on the Drive's MoBo or whatever.  I'm never easy about
trusting such a drive, but with the casing top removed, they make
interesting wall ornaments if mounted on a small wooden shield
