unless there was a good reason the drive got corrupted (like shutting
down improperly, many crashes etc.), i wouldn't risk my data on it. the
kind of failure you're talking about sounds like the drive slowly dying,
you might get it to work for awhile, but i'd bet not for long.
hopefully when it was up you backed up anything not on your last backup.
just be glad you're smart enough to do backups. get a new drive, i
just got a 60 G quantum on dirt cheap drives for <$200, smaller ones are
cheaper of course. <dirtcheapdrives.com> has been in business a long
time, but i've only used them once, less than a month ago, so i can't
say for sure there good, they are a good place to look up drive info and
comparison shop at least. it's always nice when drives die slowly, a
sudden change in a drives behavior should always be taken as a possible
warning that the drive is about to die. my last drive died, i was lucky
enough to get it to mount again so i could back up recent stuff. now
i've got 2 drives, one just for backup. with the larger drives it's the
only cheap and reasonable way to back things up.

"In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up
because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a
Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I
wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a
Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up."
