i just got a replacement maxtor, and bought myself a quantum at the same
time. the quantum is quieter and transfers data much faster for medium
size reads, they both slow down for very large files and are both quick
for very small files. neither drive can fully keep up with the ata 66
bus, although they are close. for 7200 rpm drives ata 66 is just about
right. the models are:maxtor 5T060H6 and QUANTUM FIREBALL AS A60.0 or
"QMP60000AS" depending on if you go by the dirt cheap drives number or
what apple system profiler says. both are basically 60G, although the
quantum is a little smaller. both are also ata100 capable (the quantum
is anyway, not sure about the maxtor). both are 7200 rpm. can't say
anything about reliability, although quantum's scsi drives are great
(which may have no bearing on their ata drives). fujitsu definitely
makes good drives also. in any case, steer clear of western digital and
seagate as well as conner, they've had reliability problems and in some
cases recalls to fix poorly designed hardware.
don't get a micropolis no matter how cheap, their warranty/quality
problems are what put them out of business, and i've seen one of their
later drives, i've never seen such sloppy assembly before!
i've previously had terrible problems with maxtor, which has soured me
on them. the problem with maxtor was with their "no quibble" warranty.
they quibbled allot, it took nearly 2 months of emails and phone calls,
and in the end 2 people claimed to be the same person, and insisted i
hadn't talked to anyone else. however, one voice was clearly female and
the other clearly male, but perhaps someone started taking hormones in
preparation for a sex change, it's the only way maxtor's people could
have been telling the truth. this kind of warranty nightmare is more
than enough for me to stay away from their products. the maxtor i have
came with the machine, i wish when it died i could have gotten another
brand, and i'm glad the warranty issues were handled by apple.
you shouldn't need a new cable, unless the old one only had 2 connectors
and you're going to have 2 drives, or if you've got an ata 66 bus that
was previously cabled for use only with ata 33 drives, the ata 66 and
above have cables with twice as many wires, extra grounds to make the
cable behave better.
there is an issue with using more than one drive on some of the early g3
models, it depends on the revision level of the rom, but i'm sure others
on the list who've been through that fun can comment on that aspect
better than i.
