You *do* know that Maxtor and Quantum are the same
company, right?

I have had good luck with Quantum's SCSI drives, and
have had no experience with their ATA drives.

I personally have had good experiences with Fujitsu's
SCSI drives, but others on this list, whose opinions I
respect, say they are awful, and this is why Fujitsu
is getting out of the HD business. The Western Digital
Caviar 4gb OEM drive that came originally in my Beige
G3 DT was and is the worst HD of any type that I have
ever used.

This is odd. I replaced the OEM WD drive with a Maxtor
10gb 5400rpm drive and then a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus
40 7200rpm 40gb drive. Both are fast and quiet, the
40gb drive in particular. Recently, I started
experiencing some data corruption with the 10gb drive.
I called up Maxtor, and had absolutely no problems
with their "no quibble" warranty. I was on the phone
with them for less than ten minutes, and they are
advance shipping me a new unit, with *zero* hassles.

I was so impressed with the way Maxtor handled the
whole process that I bought a DiamondMax Plus 60
7200rpm 60gb drive for $156 including shipping from
newegg.com:

You can also get the IBM DeskStar 60GXP 7200rpm 60gb
drive for $155 including shipping here:

<http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=14&manufactory=1302>

I have heard very good things about the DeskStar from
others (Hi, Peter!), and IBM makes the best SCSI
drives hands-down. However, I went for the Maxtor due
to my good history with them, and what at least I
consider to be their superior customer support (maybe
I just got lucky, dunno). I don't think you could go
wrong with either of these drives, and newegg has the
best prices I've seen.
