I know it's an old topic but it's come up again in my world. Should you
leave your computer on, sleep enabled, all the time, 24/7; or shut it down
when you don't intend to use it soon, like overnight or longer.
The main arguments for on are: heat...once warm, components are happy,
heating and cooling cause expansion contraction which damages components and
causes loose fittings, and the power surge when switched on causes damage.
Main arguments for off are: save power, all components have a given mean
time before failure, why use that time up when not using the machine, fan
failure while unattended frying system, any electrical problem unattended.
I'm sure there are many more reasons both pro and con. This subject must
have been tested both ways many times by large corporate users. Does anyone
know of the definitive end all answer to this?
