While it's true that components are most vulnerable when power is applied to them (for example a light bulb always blows when it's turned on), it is very unlikely that in the useable life of most macs, this will be an issue.
Make backups just to be safe, but the more that is switched off, the better off our planet is and the there is a lesser risk of fire.
