Also there is a lot of talk lately on the Dutch newsgroups about 'upgrading'
the Alcatel SpeedTouch Home ADSL Ethernet modem (which I have) to a Pro
version.

One of the benefits is that the modem then also becomes a router...
It seems easy to 'upgrade' it.

Here in the U.S., Earthlink has been offering a "Home Network" option which
consists of an ADSL modem and router, plus a very stiff extra monthly charge,
in addition to its standard single-user option, which consists of an ADSL
modem with no router, at a competitive monthly charge.

Supplying my own router was a very cost-effective reaction.

The router also allowed me to completely abandon Earthlink's funky and
unreliable connection software, and go with the built-in and stable Apple
Open Transport software.

With a 100/10 full-duplex connection from the router to the 8-port switch
(the router has a built-in 5-port switch, too), short messages, such as
e-mail, get to/from my Mac a lot faster, too, as an additional benefit.
