The default from the drive manufacturer is full device capacity and Master.

Your G3 MT may or may not be able to support Slaves.

All MT's, however, will support at least two EIDE devices ... Bus 0, Master 
(standard HD), and Bus 1, Master (standard CD-ROM).

If your MT supports Slaves (Rev. 2 and Rev. 3 mobos only), then Bus 1 may 
have a Slave, which is often a Zip.

The Apple Bus 0 cable is not long enough to support a Slave, therefore the MT 
doesn't directly support Bus 0, Slave.

It is, however, possible to support Bus 0, Slave, with some EIDE "voodoo".
