Aloha Ian
I have had many of those printers with the same problem.
Easy to fix if one is willing to take it apart. I found that it is a
real simple printer to take apart and put back together. I then
took the roller and went to the local hardware store and match the
"O" rings to as close a match as possible. As I remember the "kit"
that has the replacement o-rings ran around $25-35 from Apple or
such. O-rings to match at the store run around 30-65 each. I
picked up several of the different diameter and thickness ones and
tried them on for size when I got home. As I remember I did not go
with the thicker ones. The o-rings that I did take off the
roller were basically totaly gone. Some just crumbled and others
were cracked so bad that I wondered how it even worked. If one has
broken...best to take the printer apart to extract the pieces or
they will cause a jam.

I help with our local Mac Users group here in resurecting
and getting computers and printers set up for the kids at the local
Big Brothers Big Sisters. Those printers are a charm to work on.
Epson printers and head clogs are another matter.

Hope this helps
Steve
