Not really Lou.

Have you ever seen a Linux box boot? I have two and one (a P-200)
takes one minute and the other (PII-266) which is loaded takes five
minutes. Think of it this way: OS 9 is like System 7 - it doesn't
take long to load those basic drivers; but OS X is like a Cray system
- it has a lot of fangled drivers that add to the stability of the
OS. They are needed to get it to run all the time and are thus loaded
at startup: 500 Digital camera drivers (which are included) however
are not needed. But Printer Drivers, Samba, NFS, Apache, Sendmail,
FTP, Network stuff (finger, whois, telnet, etc) and other system
components like that.

All your settings are loaded before you get to the desktop (if you
have auto-login enabled).

You should be happy. OS X went down in flames after I attempted to
install AOL for OS X on Monday night. I haven't fixed it yet. I even
let it load overnight last night and I think the kernel is shot. OS X
fixes errors (linux in general, actually) automatically if the drives
are not shut down properly. That is why you can *easily* corrupt the
kernel if you are not careful. I have lost my two servers four times
due to power outages as it was downloading files and serving web
pages. It's not fun but you have to pay a price for the Finder not
crashing every 18 hours.
