I have a B&WG3 rev2 and I had a lot of trouble when I tried to install a
retail version of the OS [I think 8.6] instead of the OS CD [same version]
which came with the machine. Certainly for that computer you needed to
install [or reinstall actually] the OS from the CD which came with the
machine. Upgrading OSs then on top of the first OS, or clean install of
higher OSs was easy. Whether a later OS version would clean install
without first installing the original OS version I don't know.
HTH a bit
