I think I have posted this before, so skip ahead if you want-
Some say you need a machine-specific OS install CD but many times this is
not true (though it may be true for some models). I used an iBook OS9.1
install CD to install to both my daughter's rev A iMac and my my Starmax
(P'mac 4400) clone and they run fine- my used beige G3 came w/ 9.1 so I
didnt try it on that. I would bet if you can get an iBook install CD it
would work for you.
Don't install 9.2 unless youre installing OSX- 9.1 will be more
reliable, though I dont find it significantly different from 8.6- it does
use a bit more RAM though. The Sherlock 2 Finder is nice. Stay w/ 8.6 if you
want, but someday you may want to run some software that requires 9.

Good deal. All I've done to upgrade my Beige G3 is to transfer my Jaz
drive to it, swap the ZIF from a 300 to a 400 G3 (net cost after selling the
300 ZIF- $50, well worth it), and put in a 4mb VRAM chip (btw, it uses the
same one as the older tray-load iMacs). I'm considering a larger HD and
firewire card so my daughter can do video editing. Anyone have cheap one for
sale?
