NEGATIVE. they bought allot more than the name, they bought the factories, designs, and models, and most likely most of the staff. maxtor is likely in the process of maxtorizing the quantum line, but it will fortunately take some time. they very likely are trying to call models with similar specs (speed, capacity) the same and cross boxing them, but there are differences, they are fundamentally different designs produced in different plants with different tooling and personnel.
despite my problems with maxtor i bought a quantum drive shortly after the merger, but only because it was a good deal and i new that being a quantum drive it was unlikely i'd have to deal with their rotten warranty people. i probably shouldn't have, i probably should have paid $10 more for ibm. maxtor may very well produce good hardware, but there warranty support is hideous. they essentially told me to go play with myself when i tried to get a drive replaced, because they had discontinued that model they thought they could just blow off the warranty despite the fact that it was listed on their website as being covered by the "no quibble" warranty, which i pointed out to them. having it on the corporate page was publishing it and making a warranty, it took over 2 months, multiple long distance phone calls, emails etc. to get them to do any thing about it. what finally got thier attention was when i started contacting and warning thier business partners (not something i'd normally do, but they were extraordinarily arrogant). they wanted to do absolutely nothing about my bad drive, no replacement, no cash, no nothing. i threatened early on to go public with the whole story, and thier legal department threatened to sue me for slander, until i pointed out that i had every right to publish the details in whatever forum i wanted as long as i didn't call them names that didn't apply, i could leave it to the reader to conclude they were scum imho (it's only slander if it's provably untrue, since i kept the emails etc. i could easily prove my tale was accurate, and clearly indicated opinion, as opposed to stating "fact" also isn't slander). in the end, i got a phone call from a man, insisting he was the person i had talked to before, when the person i had talked to earlier at maxtor on 2 occasions had a clearly female voice (and his was clearly male), none the less he insisted it was he that i had talked to before and that there was no one else at maxtor by that name. maxtor lies, their warranties are great on paper and they may well honor them in some cases, but when it's not convenient, at least in my case, they decide to just blow you off. it's the big guy versus the little guy, and it took a hell of a big stone and sling for me to get satisfaction from them. i'd say the time i had to spend greatly exceeded the value of the drive, but i wasn't about to let them scum thier way out of a written contract. business partners are always good when there aren't problems, the test of a business relationship is when there are problems and how they are resolved, maxtor failed that test miserably. if possible they'll never get another penny of my money.
