As far as I know, OSX must be installed in the first partition of the
hard disk. It is not clear from what you wrote whether the 1GB
partition is the first or not. If it is not, then boot from the OS 9 CD
and re-format the hard disk: as you see the HD in the HD Setup (I think
it called like that, it's been a while), make sure that the 3GB are at
the top and that the 1GB is at the bottom. Name the two appropriatelly
(OS X and OS 9 for example) and install OS 9 on the 1GB partition.
Restart to OS 9 (from the 1GB HD partition) and install OS X in the 3GB
partition. It should go well from then on...

I am going to do the same on my work G3 DT pretty soon, I hope I won't
run into the same problem....
