Got it.  Doesn't like 13" Apple monitors and "hold the option key down".

Disconnecting drives didn't do it.  I disconnected each drive until I 
was left with only the CD.  Still wouldn't boot.  Holding the option key 
regained control of the keyboard and I was able to then type 'BYE' to 
allow the system to boot off the HDD.

I'll try Jaguar next week and see it it works any better.
