What happens when you boot holding the option key pressed, with an OS 9 or OS X CD in the drive? What you describe happened to me as I first tried to get OS X on my Beige G3 tower. I seem to recall correcting the IDE bus issues mentioned by others and booting with the option key. Please CC me on replies as I am on digest.
