i have an aunt in florida, and she has lost a computer to surges, even
with a surge suppresser. the advice of using one plugged into another
is good. a whole house suppresser in addition to the small ones on the
outlets would also be good. if anyone on list is comfortable doing
their own electrical work i'd be happy to tell you how to make a whole
house surge suppresser, i've even checked the nec (national electric
code), which is the basis for regs most places. it's not that expensive
to build your own, nor is it complicated. i'm not a licensed
electrician, but i've done a fair amount of wiring work for friends and
myself, and even done low voltage wiring for a bar when the electricians
didn't want to learn how the lighting system worked, they checked my
work of course and were very satisfied with the low voltage portion and
how i had connected the line power to and from the control modules, they
were actually very nice to me. then again, i'm in wyoming where people
are usually pretty nice and the unions aren't as spastic, not that
unions aren't a good thing.
