Did you try zapping the PRAM at startup? If you hold down the mouse 
button as the mac starts up, the CD tray should open...you could pop in 
a startup disk and run Disk Utility.

Although, I have to admit, I've got no bongs, bowls, joints, or spleefs 
that accompany my Mac's startup, so maybe your expectations are a 
little *high*.
