Happy Sunday Morning G-Listers: I purchased a Western Digital 80GB HD,
7200rpm with 8MB Backside Cache about 3 months ago. I installed it myself
and used it as a separate HD for OS 10.1.5. I also have a 30GB 5500 rpm
Maxtor that originally came with my G-4 400 MgHz AGP machine and I use it as
a separate HD with OS 9.2.2. So I now have 2 separate HD's with separate OS
platforms on each. Everything went fine and all has been working very well
for the last 3 months or so. Well, Fry's Electronics had a special deal on
the Western Digital 80GB HD's again, had them marked down to $99.95 with no
mail in rebate, straight price. It was such a good deal and I've been so
happy with my 1st Western Digital HD (I know, there are a few on here that
hate Western Digital and had bad experiences with them a few years back),
I've heard that they have made a concerted effort to turn their reputation
around and according to the rep at Fry's, they've had fewer W.D. HD's
returned or complaints on them than any other HD they carry. Anyway, enough
background. I don't have a CD writer, just the original CD/DVD player and I
have an Iomega tape drive.

Question: bought the new W.D. HD and want to replace the 30 GB HD. It
still works fine, but is almost out of space. My daughters play a lot of
games on the G-4, specifically the Sims, Tropico, and Myst III. I have
1.5GB of Ram, so that's not an issue. How do I transfer the existing data
on my 30 GB HD over to the new HD? Can I just make a full copy of the HD
and put it in a folder on the 2nd HD, and then after installing the new HD,
simply drag that folder into the new HD and open it? Is it that simple to
do? Should I do a complete new and clean install? I have almost all of the
3rd party software discs. I also have all of the G-4 start up discs and OS
9.2.1 install discs. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to spend hours
sitting at the computer trying to reinstall everything if it isn't
necessary. Could I make a full back up on an Iomega tape floppy and then
reinstall it back onto the new HD? Adding a 2nd HD and installing OS 10.1.2
and then upgrading it 10 10.1.5 and installing all of the apps was not at
all difficult. However, I've heard trying to transfer an OS from one HD to
another HD can be tricky and certain steps have to be followed. The HD is
supposed to be already formatted for a Mac. The 1st one was. I do have a
few programs, perhaps 18 to 24 programs that I downloaded direct from a site
and don't have any discs. I'd love to keep those without having to go back
and try to recall the Key Code and password, etc.

Sorry for the lengthy post, but I wanted to explain everything as well as I
could. Any help, suggestions, or tips to be aware of from anyone who has
successfully done this would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks in advance
and I hope everyone has a peaceful and blessed Sunday with their friends or
family!

Aloha,

Ron Ward
