Ron, I ran into the same dilemma when I upgraded the HD in my Beige G3. I was running 8.6 at the time and decided to just copy it over to the new drive. I dragged the old HD icon onto the new HD icon and 15-20 minutes later, it was finished. Dragging the icons ensures that any necessary hidden files are copied over also. Then I "blessed" the system folder on the new drive (open, then close it), set the startup disk and restarted. The only real problems encountered were broken aliases and an occasional registration that had to be re-entered. (The broken aliases occur after the old drive is removed.) This, obviously, works best if you have a stable system to begin with.
That was my first venture. After fighting with a new 40 GB Maxtor drive that was in the model number series with many issues, I installed an IBM 120GXP, 40 GB drive in it's place and re-installed everything from scratch. I did that to minimize possible corruption from the Maxtor. Took a LOT longer, but my system is more stable now. Might even put X back on. Another method is to install a fresh system on the new drive and use Conflict Catcher's "System Merge" function. CC is available at: http://www.conflictcatcher.com/ I believe you can still install it in demo mode and run System Merge. Sorry about the long reply, but I've been lurking for a while and finally had something to offer.
