that's a serious hardware flaw, and frankly one they should have checked
for.  apple should fix it free, and should upgrade the power manager so
it's not a time bomb.  with that kind of a bug i wouldn't even trust it
under x.  if apple won't fix it, i'd wire the fans right to the power
supply itself, as they should be anyway.  someone got too clever for
there own good at apple and then skimped on testing, not an unusual
problem but one apple should both fix and apologize for.  not that apple
should fire the engineer involved and kill his family, design flaws
happen, but they should be fixed, particularly on a high end item.  it's
particularly disturbing that os 9 can confuse things in such a way that
it explodes under os x, that suggest there may be some value in pram
etc. that can easily be corrupted to a dangerous effect, that's just
poor, having to reset things because it won't come on at all or fix the
clock etc. is one thing, failure of life support systems is another! 
i'd watch that machine very closely all the time, once bitten twice shy.
