My only disapointment with my B&W has been with the lack of open bays, other than HD bays (that part is great =) ). After much research I found two choices to add a CDRW to my dvdB&W.... Firewire or an internal combo drive.
an external firewire product runs about $100 used on average <most everything I buy is used =) > and adding a third party CD-drive to a mac is often sketchy at best trying to get it to work, unless specifically made for a mac. My solution...... Toshiba R1102 CDRW/DVD-ROM (8x8x8x24x) IDE/ATA this has got to be the easiest plug-n-play drive Ive ever added to a mac, aside from HD's. The only thing I did to either the drive or the system in order to get it to work was set the jumper to MASTER. Took every bit of 5 min. to install. 1st thing I did was watch a few minutes of THE MATRIX. (did have to reset the region in the drive from #1 to #2 = one click on dvd prompt ) played as good or better than my 5x stock dvd player. 2nd... Burned a data cd in toast5 3rd... Burned an audio cd in toast5 No problems nowhere. smooth as butter.......Im quite pleased. all this happiness for under $75. then one could sell their stock drive for $40 on average cutting cost of replacement cdrw/dvd to under $35. A lot of others research on this drive can be found on the xclr8 website <is where I always go first > btw the drive is also bootable <by report> still havent checked that yet, seems to be an issue booting at all with the "c" key and my macally imedia keyboard. Ill check at a alter time with my spare adb keyboard. ***only issue that I read about is that it often doesnt work with itunes or itunes/cd-burner - which I dont use so it wasnt a concern at all, Im a toast and jam kinda guy. just wanted to pass this little tid-bit of sweetness along to other B&W or G4 users in the same lack-of-bays-boat I was in.
