ah, that's the problem, you "drug" your' files, you should always drag them (or dragged them), being sure to have a designated drive that's unimpaired.... seriously though, i'd definitely delete the finder prefs after that, and it doesn't surprise me that it confused internet config. one problem when dragging files is that you can't select the invisible files so you lose those (you get the ones in folders you select, but not the ones at the directory level you are at), of course if you drag the whole drive to another, you get all the invisible files, but everything is in a folder with the name of the source drive moving everything down a level in the tree. any time a control panel causes problems or seems to be confused it's a good time to trash it's preferences and start over. the pref files can become corrupted, and the system and control panels often cannot fix them, and may even continue to make things progressively worse.
