Nothing is 100% safe. But CD media is so cheap that you can burn 2 copies of anything remotely important. Also, use the expensive 50 cent disks (good for 100 years) instead of the cheap 25 cent (10 year) ones. I used Kodak Infoguard Gold exclusively till they stopped making them. When I run out I hear that Mitsumi is similar. I wash dirty CDs in the kitchen sink, dry them, and they work. Hard disks work for years, then one day stop. Or if you drop them, get them too hot, or wet. I had two old Zip 100 external drives at work, which worked reliably for at least 5 years. I bought an internal IDE Zip for my PC to be compatible, it worked about three times before starting the click death which not only means that it can't read, it actively destroys the physical disk. A replacement did the same. It's a common opinion that Iomega's standards went way down as they tried to cut costs. I recently picked up a 640 MB MO drive. These are, like CDR, a non-contact medium, and rated to last decades. More compact than CD, and the case gives it protection from casual fingerprints and scratches. More expensive than blank CDs, about half the cost of a Zip 100. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
