What an agonizingly frustrating day!

Today I tried and tried and tried to get a 30 GB IBM DeskStar drive
working in our beige G3/266 under Mac OS X. It should have been easy.

I've been using Macs since 1990 or so and have installed more hard drives
than you can shake a stick at. With SCSI, you just had to make sure each
had a unique ID and that the last one in the chain was terminated.

Things didn't seem that messy with IDE drives. Master. Slave. Third-party
cards. It just worked.

Back in the good old days prior to Mac OS X, I should say. I absolutely
cannot get Mac OS X to boot from the DeskStar.

I have connected the IBM drive to the second internal IDE bus as a slave
and used the connectors for the Zip drive. I can format the drive,
install OS X with Carbon Copy Cloner, and boot from Mac OS 9.2.2, but it
will not boot 10.1.5.

I can make it a master and connect it to the cables where the CD-ROM
drive is usually connected. Same story.

I can put it where the primary drive was and run in on that bus, but I
cannot boot X from it.

I can hook it up to an Acard Hcard (a nice affordable Ultra66 card that
swears it's X compatible), do the whole thing yet again, and still not
boot.

I have partitioned the drive. I have made sure that the first partition
is a bit under 8 GB to avoid the well known bug. (Truth be told, I forgot
to do that on the first try.) I have set the drive to master and slave,
used both internal buses and the Acard, can boot from OS 9.2.2 each and
every time, but simply cannot boot into OS X 10.1.5.

I also gave it a shot with a Seagate Barracuda drive. Same story.

At my age, I cannot afford to pull out any more hair. Any advice greatly
appreciated.
