You had a nightmare because you did not read the " --Read me 
Instructions Before Installing--" Folder packaged with Apple's 
Iinstallation CD.

Scrolling down the Folder text  , you will find a statement --" if you 
have a third party SCSI card installed, connect a hard drive( etc)  to 
the connector on the card--- etc--

Installlng OS X on my B&W was "mickey mouse"
  I just removed my third part  SCSI card ( Sonnet ATA66) before 
installing

After installing X , I re-installed the Card and my external SCSI 
CD-RW, bootable Hard Drive and Scanner were on-line   w/o any problem
