Is it possible that this is a Mac Office 98 file ? Or a MS 2001 file? I forgot that I did remove MS Office 98 for Mac Sunday afternoon, and then installed MS Office 2001 for Mac. It has Word, Entourage, Excel, etc. The security updates I downloaded from the MacTopia site. A note said these security updates were "vital" and "extremely important" to have installed. Would it make a difference which updater I installed 1st? I know that sometimes it can, but I have never used MS office for Mac before, it was on the machine, but I always used Appleworks, Outlook Express, etc.
When I removed it, I went into Sherlock and searched for all files relating to MS Office 98 for Mac and put them in the trash. They are still there. I then installed Office 2001, rebuilt the desktop, zapped the PRAM and then we started to work on their project. My oldest daughter uses MS Word and Excel along with other Office apps, but it's through her school and they are PC's with Windows. She created a couple of sheets in Excel and typed out 20 or so pages of text in Word and it printed and everything was fine. When I turned on the computer this evening and started to open the programs we were working in, that's when the message came up. That seems so strange how a file could just vanish overnight when the computer was off. I've tried to rebuild the desktop again, zap PRAM again, and trashed the finder folder in the Sys. Preferences folder, and no luck. The same message. I can't find that utility listed anywhere in my manuals for Mac, and nothing on the knowledge base docs. It almost sounds like an OS X file, but I wasn't in OS X and it's on a completely separate hard drive. I tried to open the apps. in OS X and Photoshop and BBEdit, TexEdit, etc. will open, but when I try to open that file, classic comes up, and so does that message saying the file is missing. I've checked the disabled extensions folder, looked though the preferences folder in Sys. forward and backward to see if a file was corrupt. I even have a program that will make invisible files in preferences visible, and it's not there. Can I put Office 98 back on and run both 98 and 2001? Would I have to completely remove 2001 to make 98 work? If so, she will lose everything she worked on Sunday night and yesterday. I just don't want to mess anything else up any more than it already is. Again, thanks for the responses and if anyone can help me to figure this out, my daughters and I will be very grateful.
