you probably need to run a drive repair utility, it's not so much that a particular file is damaged as it is that the directory structure on the drive is damaged. you might try just deleting the finder preferences, but you've probably got a more serious problem. reinstalling the os might or might not fix it, if the directory structure is damaged it probably won't help.
